Roma defender Marquinhos is confident that the club are still fighting for third place in Serie A and subsequent Champions League qualification.

The capital club slipped from sixth to seventh following their 1-1 draw with Inter Milan on Sunday, in which Francesco Totti scored a controversial penalty.

However, the Brazilian centre-back still believes Roma are in with a chance of clinching third, despite being 10 points adrift of Napoli and Lazio, who are joint second behind League leaders Juventus.

He said: “Third place is some distance away today, but we have to believe until the very end of the season.

“We have to grow like any other team and we train every day in order to do that and get the best results possible.

“Now it is important that we don’t under-estimate any game.”

The former Corinthians man, who joined the club in July 2012, has made 16 appearances for Roma this season,

The Giallorossi will face Inter again this week in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final on Wednesday evening.
