Brazil 1-1 Ecuador (Léon OG; Parrales)
Brazil got their Under-20 campaign off to a rocky start in San Juan, earning a 1-1 draw thanks only to an own-goal from defender Fernando Léon.
Indeed, for long periods of the game, Brazil struggled to deal with the neat, organised football of the Ecuadorian side—with the first-half very much in the favour of the underdogs.
Ecuador took the lead on the half-hour mark as terrible marking from centre-back Luan allowed striker Miguel Parrales a free header from Jonny Uchuari’s cross from the right-flank.
Brazil struggled for fluidity with just one natural central midfielder in the lineup, while the likes of Adryan and Marcos Junior were quiet in wide roles.
They would pull a goal back before half-time, but in fortunate circumstances as Léon was helpless to prevent a shot rattling off his legs and into the net.
In the second-half, Ecuador looked to tighten things up and secure their point, with Brazil seemingly powerless to break them down. The introduction of Leandro and Fred helped, somewhat, by introducing a wide presence, but Brazil were disjointed.
At the final whistle, it was Ecuador left celebrating as they secured a well-earned point against the nation they have previously only avoided defeat against on one occasion at this level.
Later in the evening, a thrilling encounter finished Peru 3-3 Uruguay with goals aplenty in San Juan.
