Shakhtar Donetsk striker Luiz Adriano has apologised for his controversial goal scored against Nordsjaelland on Tuesday in the Champions League and promised to always respect the “rules of fair play” from now on.

Adriano, 25, caused uproar across Europe when he ran on to a pass, which was intended to be played to the Nordsjaelland keeper, and scored the first goal in Shakhtar’s 5-2 victory over the Danes.

On Wednesday UEFA revealed that it was opening disciplinary proceedings against the striker for violating the principles of conduct and the trial is set for next Tuesday.

The former Internacional player, who scored a hattrick in the game, released the below statement on the Shakhtar website on Thursday, in which he claims to have not know the ball was being returned to the opposition.

“I have not seen the beginning of a play because my back was to the ball and facing the opponent’s goal, I was in the area of attack and not realised what had happened in our half of the field.

“I was too focused on the game and when the ball landed near me and the centre backs did not react, I controlled it, past the goalie and scored. After all, this is my job – I’m a striker!

“Later, when I watched the video and talked with my companions, I understood what had happened and completely changed my opinion about the episode. I’m very sorry that this has happened, I apologise to all the fans of Shakhtar and UEFA. I had never done anything like this, I always respected the rules and I will continue to respect the rules of fair play.

“Again, I apologise for what happened and promise that such a thing does not happen again. I will focus more and be more attentive in the field and I will fully respect the rules of fair play.”
