Former Bolton Wanderers and Porto striker Mário Jardel has revealed that he would love to play for Grêmio next season, despite being 39-years-old and not playing an official game since 2010 when he turned out for Cherno More of Bulgária.

Jardel, who played one season for the Porto Alegre side 17 years ago before moving to Porto, told Globo Esporte that he thinks he can help his former side in what will be a busy year.

He said: “It will be a year of Libertadores, loaded with games. I think I can help. This is my dream.”

The forward, who spent one unremarkable season under Sam Allardyce at Bolton in 2003, plans to speak to the preseident-elect Fábio Koff in the next few days to make himself available for next season.

The striker, who scored 65 goals in his one season at Grêmio, was known in his later years, especially while in England, as being overweight and unprofessional, but the player says he is “feeling well” and training hard as he hopes to secure a deal for next season.

“I’ve always managed to overcome my obstacles. I’m proud that Ronaldo sent me an email inviting me to the Match Against Poverty (Grêmio Arena, December 19). I’m like a fine wine. The older, the better.”
