Barcelona defender Dani Alves believes it is the players’ fault that former coach Pep Guardiola left the club.

Guardiola quickly became the most successful coach in the Catalan club’s history but made the shock decision to step down as boss at the end of last season.

The Spanish coach was in charge of Barça for four years and won numerous titles, including three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies and two UEFA Super Cups.

Alves has revealed he believes Guardiola took the decision to leave because of him and his teammates.

The Brazilian said: “Pep said that he would only leave when we were no longer responding to him.

“We did not respond to him on the field as he would have liked and this is why the players feel responsible for his departure.”

New Barça boss Tito Vilanova is currently enjoying life top of the La Liga table as his side have won ten games, drew one and are yet to be beaten.

The Brazil international also spoke of his highly-rated compatriot Neymar and stated the differences between him and Blaugrana team-mate Lionel Messi.

“The difference between Messi and Neymar is that Messi plays in Europe, while Neymar is still in Brazil,” he concluded.
