Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has criticised André Santos for swapping shirts with Robin Van Persie during half-time of the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

The Brazilian left-back has come under fire for a poor display at Old Trafford as he failed to deal with Rafael and Antonio Valencia throughout the match.

Parlour believes Santos should have been concentrating more on the game and less on securing Van Persie’s shirt, especially as the striker scored against his former club after just three minutes.

He said: “That’s a joke. I wouldn’t have done that. At half-time?

“He should be concentrating on his game and he was having a nightmare.”

Santos has been the weak link in the Gunners’ side recently during the absence of the injured Kieran Gibbs.

The former Fenerbache man has struggled to hold down a regular place in Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up since joining the club for £5.6 million in 2011.

Parlour suggested the 29-year-old should not be played in defence again as he was unable to maintain defensive discipline.

“He can’t play in a back four as he gets caught out of position all the time,” he added.
