Atlético Madrid are interested in signing Wolfsburg playmaker Diego on a permanent basis in January according to an international agent.

The Brazil international was on loan at the Vicente Calderon last season and helped Atlético to secure the Europa League with a goal in their 3-0 final win over Athletic Bilbao.

Jose Maria Martin, an executive at the Bahia International agency, has revealed that the former Juventus midfielder could return to the Spanish club as early as January.

He told Punta Pelota: “Diego’s Father has received a call from Atlético. Wolfsburg are having a dreadful season and have fired [coach Felix] Magath.

“At Christmas, or at the end of the season, Diego could sign for Atleti. His family like the idea.

“[Diego] Simeone is very insistent about it. The coach thinks that, with the Brazilian, he would have a squad to aspire to everything."

Atlético are currently unbeaten in the league this season and sit joint top with Barcelona on 25 points after nine games.

Wolfsburg, on the other hand, are attempting to get back on track in the Bundesliga after the recent sacking of coach Felix Magath, who had a poor relationship with Diego.

The German club currently occupy 16th-place but have won their last two games under interim boss Lorenz Köstner, in which the Brazilian has scored on both occasions.
