Corinthians striker Emerson Sheik is hoping to return to training this week following a knee ligament injury, but has yet to set a date on return to action.

The hero of Corinthians Copa Libertadores triumph has been sidelined for 16 days with the injury but is keen to get back into training so to be fit for the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan this December.

He told Terra: “I am recovering very well. The idea is to return as soon as possible to prepare for the Club World Cup.

“I started today a little physical training, and the pain has decreased significantly. Guess that by the end of the week I already will train with the ball.”

The striker is not guaranteed a starting place in the Timao lineup, as coach Tite has a wealth of options at his disposal with Romarinho, Juan Martínez, Paolo Guerrero and Jorge Henrique all in contention for a starting place.

However, the former Qatari international is hopeful of success in Japan, but knows in Chelsea are the favourties.

“Chelsea are a great team with great players, and has our respect, whether we win or lose. But Corinthians is great also and is working. We have a game before the final, then … one step at a time. A confrontation is possible if we get to the final, but we are able to win the title.”
