Grêmio, who only replaced their manager this week after poor form saw them only sneak into the knockout-stages, produced a fine performance with newly arrived Porto-loanee Souza central to their play.

It was the Tricolor who took an early lead in somewhat fortunate fashion, as Léo Gago struck the post with a shot from just inside the area, before the ball bounced back into the net via the head of unfortunate goalkeeper Muriel.

It was not long before Internacional pulled level though, as Dagoberto found Leandro Damião on the break, with the striker producing a superb finish to level the scores.

Deep into the second-half though, the combination of two of Grêmio’s new additions provided the breakthrough that would ensure bragging rights for the blue half of Porto Alegre.

Souza, receiving the ball from Kléber, then played an intricate return ball for the striker, who had intelligently found space and produced a calm, placed finish. Inter had little time to reply and must now try to redeem themselves in the second-phase of the Gauchão.
