After a 2-1 defeat to Real Potosi in the Libertadores on Wednesday, Flamengo were hoping to get back to winning ways the Campeonato Carioca on Saturday. Vanderlei Luxemburgo opted to rest his star performers and instead depended on his second string team to do the job against Macaé. However the former Real Madrid boss’ plan backfired as the Rubro Negro were frustrated to a goalless draw.

A full strength Fluminense team ran-out 3-0 winners against Volta Redonda in the Estadio Raulino de Oliveira on Saturday evening. Although the result may appear to look convincing, the Tricolor were made to work hard for their victory with all three goals coming late in the second half. Both Wellington Nem and Anderson netted their first for the club, before Araujo added a third for Flu in added time.

On a waterlogged pitch Vasco beat Duque de Caxias 3-1 in Macaé. Goals from Juninho Pernambucano, Alecsandro and Diego Souza were enough to see off their Serie C opponents, whos only goal came from Gilcimars 20-yard strike.

At the same hour, Nova Iguaçu caused a major upset holding Botafogo to a goalless draw. The Fogão fans were clearly displeased with their teams stagnated performance and seemed to single out Elkeson to boos.
