The Caroca club were considered as serious title contenders, but their recent run of form has now put them in a posistion where they could fall out of the Copa Libertadores posistions if rivals Flamengo beat Figueirense tonight.

Last night’s 2-1 defeat to relegation contenders, America Mineiro was to the forty six year old’s last game in charge for Botafogo sincing arriving in March of this year.

After the game, the board called Caio Junior to tell him they thought it was best he stood down as coach, despite there being just three games remaining in the league.

Caio Junior released a statement saying, ”I worked tirelessly to make Botafogo a competitve team. At times we showed Brazil engaging, attacking football that charmed everyone and put us in the fight for the (Brasileiro) title) At other times we could not maintain the same standard, and that put our initial goal to qualify for the Copa Libertadores at risk.”

”I hope this change proves positive, and I will root for the team to achieve it’s goals. I thank president Mauricio Assumpacao and his fellow directors for the opportunity to work for a club as great as Botafogo.”

Botafogo have confirmed goalkeeping coach Flavio Tenius will take charge for the three remaining games left of Botafogo’s season.
