After losing to relegation struggler’s America Mineiro 2-1 on Saturday, the Tricolor club wasted a great opportunity to stay with in touching distance of Corinthians and Vasco at the top of the table.

Fluminense have still got to play Vasco in one of their remaining fixtures. A victory over their local rivals could put them right back  in the title race, providing Corinthians also drop points.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper was still full of optimism, telling Rede Globo, ”certainly the difference has opened up a little, but mathematically we still have a chance, so we must believe in it.”

Fluminense’s next game is at home against Gremio on Wednesday at the Engenhao stadium. The 2010 league champions currently sit in third place, with 56 points and will be hoping Vasco and Corinthians slip up in their fixtures.
