The king of soccer, Pele, is aiming to show solidarity to the people trying to rebuild their lives after the tragedy.

“I came to bring words of encouragement, as a representative of the Brazilian people,” said Pele.

The Brazilian idol signed autographs and soccer balls for children. Also, Brazilian companies gave donations such as blankets for the residents.

Pele is in Japan to promote the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and has been visiting the northwestern region of Japan that was devastated on March 11 by an earthquake and tsunami that left 20,000 dead or missing.

The earthquake caused a big accident in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which is only 90 miles from the school visited by Pelé.
