UEFA.com reports that the defender is due to go under the knife in a bid to solve a persistent meniscus problem in his right knee after playing through the pain barrier in the Copa America.
The 30-year-old underwent a rehabilitation programme over the summer, but it failed to solve the problem, and he is now set for a spell on the sidelines. His absence could open the door in the first team for Jonathan, who recently signed from Santos.
