Ronaldo, who helped to draw the sides for the European section, said: “I would have loved to be able to participate, but my time has passed and now I can only hope from the outside.

“I love football; it has always been my life," continued the former Seleção striker. “I wish luck to all those who will participate in 2014. I have high hopes for [Brazil coach] Mano [Menezes] and the new generation of Brazilian talent."

One of the new stars we was referring to was Neymar, who assisted with the draw for the African section. “It is a dream scenario," said the 19-year-old. “To play, and maybe win the World Cup in your own country is the best thing."

Ganso, who was alongside Ronaldo in picking out the European sides, was asked about wearing the famous Brazil number 10 shirt, following in the footsteps of the great Pele. “It is a lot of responsibility," he said. “But it brings me great honour and pride. Hopefully I can help Brazil to win the World Cup."
