Arsenal’s weaknesses in defence cost them a lot last season. With no trophy in six years it seems that the coming season is Arsene Wenger last chance before being sacked. If the rumours are right, the Gunners might lose some of their best attacking players this summer. Fabregas wants to go back to Barcelona, Nasri was linked to Manchester United and Manchester city – this morning the French midfielder said he would stay for one more season.

But what worries the most Wenger is his defence. Last season recruits Larent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci had a hard time adapting to the English style.

At the beginning of the transfer window Wenger had his eyes on Christopher Samba (Blackburn Rovers) and Gary Cahill (Bolton) but the French manager is now reportedly interested in the 29-year-old Brazilian Alex.

The experienced Chelsea defender might be exactly what Arsenal need: an athletic defender to hold the line and guide the youngsters like Johan Djourou. Since another Brazilian, David Luiz, signed at Chelsea, Alex has become a second choice at Stamford Bridge and he might be tempted to join the rivals in order not to sit on the bench throughout the season.
