The Blues took the lead after two minutes when a corner was volleyed in by Branislav Ivanovic.

Ryan Taylor’s free-kick deflected in off Jonas Gutierrez for Newcastle to make it 1-1, before Alex looked to have given Chelsea the win when he headed in from a free-kick.

But the visitors left with a point as Steven Taylor equalised in stoppage time. Ramires played 65 minutes, while David Luiz was an unused substitute.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Sandro helped Tottenham to a 2-0 win at Liverpool, thanks to goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric.

Lucas played the full 90 minutes for Liverpool who slip to sixth in the table, with Tottenham now the favourites to claim the final Europa League spot after overtaking them.

Aston Villa secured their place in next season’s Premier League with a shock 2-1 win away to Arsenal, for whom Denilson was an unused substitute.
