Many of the teams will take advantage of the FIFA friendlies at the end of this month to wear new uniforms. One of them will be Spain, which for the matches against Colombia and Brazil, will have a new shirt with a detail that attracts attention: a carnation on its back.

This has an explanation: the carnation is the national flower of Spain. “The home shirt is inspired by the national flower to put a touch of Spanish passion on the playing field,” said the manufacturer Adidas when presenting the design.

“The symbol of the carnation has its roots in the legacy of Emperor Charles I of Spain and V of Germany, who gave his wife, Isabel of Portugal, the first carnation in the history of Spain. The empress greatly liked her gift, so the emperor asked the gardeners to plant thousands of carnations in the gardens of the Alhambra and their aroma spread throughout the surroundings,” noted the manufacturing company.

“From then on, the carnation began to be famous in Spain. As a last act of love, it is said that Charles V ordered his wife to be buried surrounded by his favorite flower,” he added about the uniform, which the team will wear at Euro 2024 to be held in Germany.

Spain will face Colombia on March 22 in London and four days later against Brazil at the Santiago Bernabéu. The coach Luis de la Fuente has already given the squad list that has two great new features: the inclusion of the young FC Barcelona center back Pau Cubarsí and the Athletic Club de Bilbao defender Dani Vivian.
