Santos defeated Figueirense 1-0 at the Estádio Orlando Scarpelli on Wednesday in the first-leg of their Copa do Brasil quarterfinal fixture.
19-year-old forward Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa scored the team’s winning goal from the spot, and club top-scorer Ricardo Oliveira, who had missed four penalties prior to the fixture, explained why he didn’t take it. He was quoted in Globo Esporte: “Above the individual, it’s the collective. Had already spoken to Gabriel that he could hit it. Today, he was confident, so he took the ball and hit it. Deserved because he played great.”
Gabigol had two goals disallowed in the first-half before netting his 5th goal in this season’s Copa do Brasil and is now 2nd on the top-scorer list. He said: “I was sad to see the first two goals not being counted, but I stayed calm, won the penalty and had the opportunity to convert; thank God. The win is important, but we have to stay focused to continue in the competition.”
