The announcement expands a relationship between club and player which was formalised in 2013, when Pelé became a Santos global ambassador.

Under the terms of the revised deal, Santos will retain the rights to use Pelé’s image in its marketing activities. It has also agreed a licensing deal, which will see Santos and Pelé work together to create and sell products bearing his name and likeness.

Pele, who is currently recovering from a urinary infection in hospital, played for Santos for 18 years, scoring 1,091 goals in the process.

“The Pelé and Santos FC brands will always be related,” confirmed Santos president Odílio Rodrigues.

“We expect this agreement to last forever, just like Pelé’s legacy, and that is essential for our brand strategies. We have the greatest player of all time in our history, in our present and in our future. We are so pleased to be able to make this announcement at this time.”

The deal was put together by Legends 10, Pelé’s exclusive global agent
