Thiago Silva own goal scuppers PSG title celebrations
Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-1 draw at home to Sochaux on Sunday dashed their hopes of wrapping up the Ligue 1 title with three games to go.
Edinson Cavani put PSG in front in the first half, but a second-half Thiago Silva own goal earned Sochaux a share of the spoils and left Laurent Blanc’s side eight points clear of nearest challengers Monaco with three games remaining.
Brazilian midfielder Lucas went close to opening the scoring from a corner as the 21-year-old’s header was hacked off the line by a Sochaux defender.
Four minutes later, however, PSG were ahead as Cavani chested down a superb long ball from Thiago Motta and then volleyed past the goalkeeper for his 16th league goal of the season.
However, the hosts deservedly drew level in the 56th minute, when a Sochaux cross was met by the PSG goalkeeper’s fist, only for the ball to rebound off Thiago Silva and trickle into the net.
It was the Brazil captain’s second own goal of the season, having also put through his own net in the 1-1 draw with Monaco in February.
Both teams had chances to win the game and Lucas shaved the post with a right-footed effort for the visitors.
PSG will host Rennes on May 7 for another chance to wrap up the title.
