Former Liverpool left-back Fábio Aurélio made his debut at Grêmio yesterday, in the 1-1 draw against Passo Fundo for the Rio Grande do Sul State Championship.

He joined Grêmio in June 2012, but struggled with injuries and had his debut postponed many times by his club.

His last game before joining Grêmio was on May 1, 2012, when Liverpool were beaten 0-1 by Fulham for the English Premier League.

The 33-year old left-back is happy that he could finally play, he said after yesterday’s game: “I’m very pleased to be back after such a long time away. Being able to play an official game again made me very happy”.

He added: “It’s a personal victory after being out for so long, but the game’s result was more important”.

Grêmio hired famous physiotherapist Nílton Petrone to deal with Fábio Aurélio’s recovery. Petrone, better known as Filé, is famous for having treated Romário, Ronaldo, tennis player Gustavo Kuerten and other Brazilian stars.

Besides Fábio Aurélio, Grêmio also former Arsenal left-back André Santos, who is the usual starter.
