PSG have threatened legal action over Joey Barton’s bizarre “ladyboy” rant at club captain Thiago Silva.

The Marseille midfielder took to Twitter after PSG’s 2-2 draw with Barcelona to question Silva’s decision to criticise Barton in a pre-match press conference before debating whether the defender was a “ladyboy”.

The comments provoked outrage on the social network and PSG have moved quickly to release a statement on the row.

A statement on their official website said: ”Thiago Silva and Paris St-Germain reserve the right to take any action they deem necessary.

“Unacceptable remarks have been made by Olympique Marseille player Joey Barton against Paris St Germain player Thiago Silva.

“These attacks are serious and go beyond mere verbal jousting. The directors of the club, the players and the coaching staff are supportive of Thiago Silva and cannot accept such statements.

“They reaffirm their unwavering commitment to the values of respect that should govern our sport.”

French publication L’Equipe also waded into the row, slamming Barton’s comments in a front page splash questioning if that was “British humour”.
