After seven months away, Lucas Paquetá returned to the Brazilian national team in grand style, playing a central role in the friendlies against England and Spain.

The midfielder, who was absent from the initial rounds of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup due to an investigation into sports betting, had a standout performance, showcasing his importance in coach Dorival Júnior’s tactical setup.

Performed well in both friendlies:

In the match against Spain, Paquetá was crucial, scoring the penalty goal that secured a 3-3 draw in stoppage time.

Furthermore, his tactical versatility was evident as he transitioned through different positions in the offensive sector, playing as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, and on both the left and right wings, adapting to the team’s needs throughout the match.

The player commented on his return to the national team and his participation in the friendlies, expressing his joy at being back and contributing to the national team.

Player’s quotes:

Paquetá highlighted that he followed Brazil’s games while away and that his ultimate goal was always to represent the country. He also emphasized the importance of the work done at West Ham, the club where he plays, as preparation for his return to the national team.

“I am happy to have returned, to have done my part. My dream has always been to be here. I work hard at my club for this. I watched all the games (while I was away), I confess that I cheered a lot, stayed at home with my family rooting for my teammates,” he said.

Return to England:

Now, Paquetá returns to West Ham for the final stretch of the Premier League season, awaiting a resolution regarding the investigation by the English Federation.

If cleared of any wrongdoing or if the process remains unresolved by then, it is expected that he will be included in Dorival Júnior’s call-up list for the Copa America, with the announcement scheduled for mid-May.
