On Thursday morning (22), the Spanish Justice system released the sentence for Daniel Alves: 4 years and 6 months in prison for raping a 23-year-old woman at a nightclub in late 2022.

Dani Alves could have faced a longer sentence, as the Spanish Public Prosecutor requested 9 years in jail, and the victim’s defense wanted the Brazilian to be imprisoned for 12 years.

Did Neymar help Daniel Alves reduce his prison sentence?

Yes. During his time in prison, Daniel Alves agreed to compensate the rape victim with 150,000 euros (around R$900,000). The former right-back had his accounts frozen, so to obtain the money, he relied on Neymar’s family’s assistance.

Neymar’s father, in an interview with CNN, confirmed that they loaned money to Neymar’s former national team colleague.

“The family asked us for help. Daniel didn’t have the money to defend himself, and the deadline for defense payment was expiring. Think about it, at no moment could I deny help to a friend who is trying to defend himself against an accusation,” said Neymar’s father in January.

Neymar’s father denied that the financial assistance implied agreement with the acts allegedly committed by Daniel Alves.

“Until now, the presumption of innocence is valid worldwide. Either we participate in a pre-lynching and public trial or we try to help a friend and let justice decide Daniel’s fate,” said the businessman in January.

Dani Alves has his accounts frozen

According to UOL, Dani Alves has his Brazilian accounts frozen due to a legal dispute between the former player’s family and his ex-wife, Dinorah Santana.

Value reduces Dani Alves’ sentence

According to the Spanish Justice system, this amount paid by Daniel Alves constitutes a “mitigating factor for repairing the damage caused.” The money goes entirely to the rape victim.

When a defendant takes this measure, their total sentence is reduced, as was the case for Daniel Alves.
