Chelsea winger Willian says that he does not think there is any need to spy on other team’s training sessions in the modern day, after Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa caused controversy by admitting to regularly spying on opposition training sessions.
The Leeds boss says he has spied on every team Leeds have played this season, but Willian says this tactic is a little dated in the modern age, “I think that happened a lot in the past. I don’t know, 10 years ago, even more, there was this story”, Willian told Sportv.
“Nowadays, there is no longer this need. You can study the opposing team watching videos, games, advanced technology. You can see the way they play, defend, attack… There’s no need to put a spy. I don’t know if it’s lack of fair play, but it’s a bit odd to put a spy to watch.”
When pressed on whether the practice is unethical, Willian agreed, “I think so… the way it is done. There’s someone there that you don’t know who is filming the training to pass information.
“It may be unethical yes. As I said, there are several ways to study the opponent. You do not need to see anyone’s training. It was a bit unethical.”
