Juventus winger Douglas Costa has been punished with a four match suspension in Serie A after appearing to spit in the face of Sassuolo's Federico Di Francesco during a Serie A clash on Sunday.

The pair clashed in the dying minutes of the game and the contretemps concluded with Costa spitting at Di Francesco from close range. The incident was caught by a VAR official and Costa was sent off.

Costa took to his Instagram page to apologise for the incident and was reprimanded by Juve boss Max Allegri, saying the incident had “damaged” and “shocked” the squad, insisting it was “totally out of his character”.

The Italian added: “He's apologised, he'll pay with a four-match ban and he'll show with fair play on the pitch that this was an isolated incident.” The Brazilian will miss league games against Frosinone, Bologna, Napoli and Udinese.
