Chelsea have confirmed that defender David Luiz broke his wrist during Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. The player collided with an advertising hoarding just before half-time and emerged for the second half with heavy strapping.

It’s now emerged that the wrist was broken. The Brazilian was sent off in the final minutes for a high challenge on Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac and will be suspended for the next three Premier League games as a result.

However, he is eligible to play against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League next week, but is a doubt due to this injury. He may have to seek permission to play with a cast if necessary.

Following the Blues’ 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte did hint that he would be available for the Madrid tie, saying, “he must be ok” before any decision will be taken.

The Italian coach added, “David is an important player for us. For sure he will be ready for the game against Atletico Madrid.”

Brazilian youngster Kenedy was on the scoresheet in the victory over Forest. The player’s future at the club was called into question after he was expelled from a pre-season tour of China for making offensive remarks on social media.

Conte said of Kenedy, “Kenedy played very well. He’s working very well, he’s working a lot. When there will be the opportunity, a new chance, he must exploit it.”
