Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva says that Jurgen Klopp’s team selection for the EFL Cup tie against Spurs on Wednesday night shows how much trust he has in his squad. Liverpool do not have European football this year, but Klopp still integrated some squad players and youngsters into his match day squad.

“Klopp showed the trust he has in the squad,” Lucas told Liverpoolfc.com, “We probably didn’t expect that many changes until Monday. After 70 minutes we started to struggle a little bit; it’s normal, some of us haven’t played much in the last few weeks.

“But at the end we showed a lot of hunger and determination to win and get through to the next round. We expected a very strong team and a very difficult game. We could see it was two very good teams trying to win.

“I think we deserved it because in the end we were better than them. Probably the last 15 minutes they were better than us, but throughout the game I think we were better and deserved it.” Lucas reserved special praise for youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria, who made their full debuts.

“They are fantastic players,” he said. They are very young and still learning, but they are very good boys and they have already improved a lot since they started with us. They have a brilliant future ahead of them and hopefully it will be here at Liverpool.”
