Currently at Zenit, the 71-year-old was Ronaldo’s coach at Inter Milan.
Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, now at Zenit and Ronaldo’s former coach at Inter Milan, has said that the Brazilian used to spent more time at nightclubs. Lucescu said: “I really liked to have him on my team, but he did not like to train. He spent more time at clubs, than on the field. He wanted to play without training, but his talent was fantastic.”
Lucescu also weighed in on the differences between Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho. According to him, Guardiola is more arrogant as a coach than the current Manchester United boss. He added: “Mourinho seems more arrogant than Guardiola, but it’s exactly the opposite. Mourinho is a great guy, but my way of understanding football is totally different from him. I have an attacking mentality, all my teams broke goalscoring records. I like to build.”
The coach of Zenit also talked about the difficulty in adapting the team’s play without Brazilian striker Hulk, who made history in Russia and moved to China in a €55 million move. He said: “It was very difficult to change the mentality in Russian football, they were so used to those long balls towards Hulk. I explained that we have to play without him.”
