Rafael Carioca and Wendell were called up to the Brazilian national team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Coach Tite announced on Monday that Bayer Leverkusen left-back Wendell and Atlético Mineiro midfielder Rafael Carioca have been called up to the national squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Venezuela. They’ve replaced Marcelo and Casemiro, who were removed from the list due to injury. Casemiro suffered a crack in his fibula in the game against Espanyol on the 18th of September, and is expected to return in three weeks. The left-back has a grade two injury in his right calf muscle and should be sidelined for two weeks. Marcelo was injured last Wednesday during the match between Real Madrid and Villarreal.
This is Wendell’s first call up to the main national team. The former Grêmio player has participated in friendly matches of Brazil’s U23 side, but missed the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In the case of Rafael Carioca, he was part of Tite’s squad for the matches against Ecuador and Colombia, but did not enter the field.
The national team will start preparing for the games against Bolivia and Venezuela on October 2nd. Brazil will face Bolivia on October 6 at the Arena das Dunas in Natal, and then takes on Venezuela on 11th, away from home. Brazil currently sits second in the World Cup qualifiers table with 15 points, one less than leader Uruguay.
