Assembling the list of 18 players for the this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is like a puzzle for Rogério Micale, Dunga and Gilmar Rinaldi.
22-year-old goalkeeper Éderson’s status grew in recent weeks, and the technical committee are considering to take Chelsea midfielder Willian to the Rio as one of the players above 23, along with Neymar. A starter at Benfica in the absence of the injured Júlio César, the youngster had convincing performances and drew the attention of the technical committee for his maturity in key games for the Portuguese team. Before, it was certain that an experienced goalkeeper would be picked to join the Olympic team but the rise of Éderson has changed this scenario. On Thursday, Brazil’s Olympic national team lost 1-0 at Estádio Kléber Andrade, but Éderson once again impressed with his display. Internacional’s 23-year-old keeper Álisson, who’s currently first-choice in the senior team, is seen as the favourite to go to the Olympics, but Éderson’s development makes the coaching staff confused.
On the other hand, Willian was included in all call ups of Dunga, and is having consistently good performances for Chelsea. Selecting him for the Olympics has beeen something considered by CBF for weeks, and team coordinator Gilmar Rinaldi was in London just to talk to Chelsea about a possible release of Willian. In addition to Neymar, it is worth remembering that the other option among three experienced players will be Inter Milan’s Miranda.
A point to be considered is the fact that Éderson is the only Brazilian goalkeeper under the age of 23 with some professional experience. The other options such as Uilson of Atlético Mineiro and Matheus Vidotto of Corinthians are considered immature to take responsibility at the Olympics.
