Top goal-scorer in Europe this season, Benfica striker Jonas says that he was very motivated by his return to the national team, where he was away for four years, but lamented that his selection was due to injuries to two other players, Kaká and Roberto Firmino.
Jonas will start from the bench in the match between Brazil and Uruguay, on Friday, at the Arena Pernambuco for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. “Unfortunately now I’m in due to injury to other players,” he said during an interview on the afternoon of Wednesday in Teresópolis. Jonas says that he didn’t recognize the phone number and asked his mother-in-law to attend the call when Brazilian team coordinator Gilmar Rinaldi contacted him to select him to replace Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino. He added: “I asked my mother to pick up. When she handed me the phone, I was very happy to immediately identify the voice of Gilmar.”
With 29 goals, Jonas currently leads the race for the European Golden Boot Award, a prize previously won by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
