2015 Brasileirão champions Corinthians have a very interesting trip in their opening group stage match of next year’s Copa Libertadores.
Corinthians will travel to El Salvador, Chile, to face Cobresal, but the date of the fixture hasn’t been confirmed by CONMEBOL. As mentioned in Globo Esporte, the town with a population of 8,000 people, has a stadium, El Cobre, which holds 20,000 spectators. The most important fact of the stadium is its location; El Cobre is situated in the middle of the Atacama Desert, which is 1,000 km from the capital Santiago and at an altitude of 2,500m. The grass is natural, despite the climatic difficulties. Cobresal were the Chilean league champions this year for the first time in their history, and are competing in the Copa Libertadores for the second time. The only time they’ve been part of the competition was back in 1986, when the club did not lose any of their fixtures; five draws and one win in six games.
Corinthians are in Group 8 of the 2016 Libertadores, along with Cerro Porteño and Cobresal. The winner of the first-round fixture between Oriente Petrolero and Independiente Santa Fe will also join Tite’s men in their group.
