Santos considered offering Al Nassr the revenue from playing a friendly against Barcelona, to permanently buy attacking midfielder Marquinhos Gabriel from the Saudi Arabian side.
When Neymar was sold to the Spanish club, it was agreed that the Brazilian club and the Catalans would play two friendlies, and one has already been played in 2013, where Barça won 8-0 at Camp Nou. As mentioned in Lance!, Santos have until 2017 to set the date of the second friendly, and if Barcelona do not accept, they will have to pay €4.5 million to Santos. The idea of the board of Santos was to offer Al Nassr the opportunity to host their friendly with Barcelona in Saudi Arabia and also the revenue from the game. The possibility was revealed by club president Modesto Roma Júnior, but the idea is believed to be discarded. Marquinhos Gabriel’s loan deal is expiring, and although Corinthians have also shown interest in the player, Santos have an option to buy him for €3.5m. Santos’ strategy now is to offer the club that owns the economic rights of Marquinhos Gabriel payment in some annual installments or even use a letter of credit or an investor.
