No one else will ever use the numerical combination “01” flaunted by São Paulo’s legendary goalkeeper Rogério Ceni for many years of his career.
On the evening of Friday, the Brazilian club officially retired the number made famous by Ceni, who’s considered to be the greatest goalkeeper in the club’s history. The number 1 shirt will continue to be worn by other goalkeepers, but without the zero. Rogério Ceni started using the 01 shirt in 2007, at a time when the number 10 shirt was unused. It gained attention, the fans liked the idea and all shirts of the goalkeeper until retirement, had the two digits on the back.
The now former captain, also said he wants his ashes to be thrown into the stadium when he die. The desire was revealed after a friendly match that marked his farewell to the Morumbi, aged 42, on Friday. He said: “It is my last wish, perhaps the most difficult, but one day it will happen. I want my body to be cremated, and the ashes can be played at the Morumbi, so that I will be remembered forever.”
