Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has revealed that the most important thing for the Reds under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp is to press as a unit.
The Brazilian midfielder who was speaking to Liverpool’s official website insisted that his new boss stresses the importance of playing with ‘as much freedom as possible.’
Coutinho stated: “He asks for us to play with as much freedom as possible when we have the ball, but when we lose it we are asked to recover it as quickly as possible.
“We press very high with the intention of trying to make the other team lose the ball close to their goal.
If we do it right, and with the ball back in these areas, it gives us a better chance to score.”
“The most important thing is that it is imperative for the team to press together. This is what we have been trying to do and this is how we are developing as a team.”
This ‘gegen-pressing’ was prominent under Klopp in Germany, but only time will tell if it will reap the kind of rewards that saw Dortmund win two successive Bundesliga titles and arrive at a Champions League final.
