The Brazil women’s team are out of the World Cup after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Australia.

Brazil had won every match in the group stages without conceding a goal but came unstuck ten minutes from time when Kyah Simon struck from close range. The game was closely fought throughout with Brazil shading posssesion but failing to create many chances.

Formiga did go close with a header in the second half but the ball bounced off the post to safety. Australia will now face the winner of Japan or the Netherlands in the quarter finals.

“We controlled the game,” said Brazil coach Vadao. “The statistics show that, the chances showed that but we lost the game and we are out.”
