After São Paulo’s elimination in the second round of the Copa Libertadores, Tricolor goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni confirmed to the press that he will retire when his contract expires in August. Aged 42, he had extended his six-month contract last December to give him a last chance to win the Copa Libertadores but, unfortunately for him, Cruzeiro cut short this adventure in this competition.

After the tie in Belo Horizonte, which the Paulista side lost on penalties, the legendary goalkeeper informed his teammates of his decision.

He said: “There is a contract that was signed. Everything went well at the time of the extension. I was offered an extension until August 6 and it’s done. It’s always disappointing to say goodbye to this event which was the last opportunity for me. We did not deserve to end that way, so fast, we could have gone further. I thanked everyone in the dressing room.”
