São Paulo loanee Álvaro Pereira is set to return to Internazionale in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Argentine daily sports newspaper Olé, as reported by website Forza Italian Football, claims that the Uruguay international – capped 65 times – will terminate his deal with São Paulo six months ahead of its originally agreed conclusion date of 30th June 2015.

The reason behind this decision is Inter’s apparent desire to sell him on to River Plate, who are believed to be looking for a replacement for left full-back Leonel Vangioni. The 27 year-old is reportedly close to completing a switch to Milan.

Pereira joined São Paulo in January and made 21 appearances to help them finish 2nd in the Brasileirão.

The 29 year-old had previously spoken about his desire to remain with Muricy Ramalho’s side, but with Inter reportedly keen to recoup some of the €12 million they reportedly spent on signing him from Porto in August 2012, a permanent switch has always seemed unlikely to be financially viable.

Pereira joined Inter after winning eight major honours across four years at Fotbal Club CFR 1907 Cluj and Porto, but struggled in Italy, despite featuring 47 times.
