Roma defender Maicon felt a penalty shouldn’t have been awarded against him during the defeat to Juventus this afternoon.

The Brazilian blocked Andrea Pirlo’s free kick with his hand but even a replay failed to clarify if the incident occurred inside or outside the box.

After the match, the former Brazil international spoke to Sky Sport Italia about the incident.

Football Italia quoted him, he said: “The first sensation was that it wasn’t a penalty, as my arm was across my body, so whether it was in or out of the box shouldn’t have mattered.

“We had such a good game, it’s a real shame about these incidents.

“The referee? We all go on to the field hoping to do our best and we all know that doesn’t always happen. It’s a tough job.”

Maicon acknowledged that Juventus’ victory means they are again favourites for the new Serie A season.

He added: “They are the same team as last season with some new players and these matches count a great deal, so they are still a step ahead.

“However, we are working and growing, so hope to continue along this path.”
