Palmeiras head coach Ricardo Gareca has welcomed the return of Jorge Valdivia to Brazil, but has no idea whether or not the Chilean playmaker has a future with the Sao Paulo-based outfit.

Valdivia is believed to have come back into the country following the collapse of a move to the Middle East with Al Fujairah and then a subsequent period where his location was unknown.

Speaking in the wake of his side’s 1-0 Copa do Brasil win over Serie B team Avai, Gareca said: “I know that Valdivia trained at the academy, but I do not know the situation.”

“I’ve always said I like Valdivia, but I do not know the physical condition in which he arrives, or if he will be staying at Palmeiras. I do not know how long it will take to prepare him, it is a problem of management.”

Valdivia has played at Palmeiras for six years, over two spells, and would most probably be welcomed back by the club’s fans as they bid to exit a run of form that has failed to yield a league win in seven attempts.
