Former Brazil international star Zico has told his country to face up to reality after they were hammered 7-1 by Germany in the semi finals of the recent World Cup.

Zico, 61, played at three tournaments for Brazil and told Bild: “It’s time to put on the sandals of humility and start from scratch. You can’t keep hiding. You have to change many things.”

“All I hear is that there were mistakes and that it does not matter when you lose in the semi final against Germany, whether it’s by one goal or seven. But that’s not acceptable.”

“We need to rethink the training of our players. We should be working with mostly young talents.”

Although never a major tournament winner himself, Zico was part of a generation of Brazilian players that were often lauded for their performances, something that the current group on offer has struggled to do.
