The Brazilian party that seems to have only started a short while ago has rattled through its 64 matches in the blink of an eye, and Mario Gotze’s winner for Germany in the final against Argentina helped the 2014 edition reach a landmark.
The last goal of the competition equalled the record number of goals for a World Cup, set in 1998 with 171; an average of 2.67 strikes per game.
The group stages, where so much of the World Cup came alive, witnessed an incredible 136 goals in 48 matches (2.83 per game), the amount dropping off somewhat during the knockout phase (2.19).
Additionally, there were a record number of goalscorers at the 2014 World Cup, with 121 players notching for their respective countries at the most prestigious tournament of them all.
