Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has suffered tragedy on the eve of the World Cup after it emerged that a nephew of his was killed in a car crash two days before Brazil’s opening match.

The news filtered through late last night to various news agencies in the country and reports suggest that Tarcisio Joao Schneider, 48 years old, crashed into a truck near Passo Fundo, which is where Scolari’s family hail from.

Last month, Scolari has to attend the funeral service of his brother-in-law; it is not yet known what his plans are surrounding the recent news and the start of the World Cup.

The tournament gets underway tomorrow night with the hosts facing Croatia at 2100GMT.
