Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has outlined his disappointment that Thiago is unable to play at this summer’s World Cup.

The Spain international, who is the son of former Brazil star Mazinho, will have to undergo surgery after sustaining a partial rupture to his intra-articular ligament.

Thiago had been selected by Spain head coach Vicente del Bosque in his provisional squad and Rummenigge admits he is devastated at not being able to play.

“This is a really tough blow for Thiago, we feel really sorry for him,” he said, as reported by UEFA.com. “He is a young player who worked hard for his comeback and the World Cup in his father’s homeland.

“All of a sudden both dreams are shattered. We will take care of him in the upcoming weeks and will do everything necessary to get him fit for the start of the 2014/15 season.”
