Any Everton move for striker Romelu Lukaku appears to be dependent on his parent club Chelsea successfully completing their own pursuit of Brazilian-born forward Diego Costa, from Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

In the usual pre-summer transfer speculation, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has told reporters that he is prepared to wait for his man, but admits that any deal for Costa would determine Lukaku’s next port of call:

“We’ll see what’s the best thing for everyone. But everything will be in stages: how Chelsea are doing in their own squad and how that frees some players.”

“It’s going to take a bit of time and I don’t think Romelu’s situation is going to be resolved before the World Cup, in truth.”

The Belgium international is expected to lead the line for his country at the tournament after a serious injury to fellow forward Christian Benteke; Belgium will line up in Group H of the competition alongside Russia, South Korea and Algeria.
