The return of centre back Holger Badstuber from a lengthy injury could potentially spell trouble for Bayern Munich teammate Dante, after the German international spent 17 months out with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Badstuber, 25, had been a mainstay of Bayern’s rise to the summit of European football and reports suggest that coach Pep Guardiola is unhappy with his defensive options after they crashed out of the Champions League in embarrassing style to Spanish giants Real Madrid in midweek.

With Jerome Boateng’s versatility across the back four set to spare him the axe, Brazil’s Dante will be sweating on his own future after a shaky performance against Madrid.

Dante had been linked at one point with a move to Manchester United but recently signed a new deal with the Bavarian side that ties him to the club until 2017.

However, with a likely defensive tinkering by Guardiola coming before the new season starts, a move away from the Allianz Arena for Dante should not be ruled out.
