In his book, “My Name is Neymar”, due to be released on 26 February, the Brazilian star explained how he was approached in March 2006.

Although he has only just turned 22, Neymar is already preparing to release an autobiography in which he reveals that he rejected the chance to join Real Madrid eight years ago.

His father Neymar da Silva explained that “there wasn’t enough money in Madrid to buy my son’s happiness” and that “success has not gone to his head.”

Neymar’s decision to not move purely for financial gain is in line with Tito Vilanova’s comments upon the Brazilian’s arrival. The former manager said, “I also have to congratulate Neymar for choosing a sporting project and not a financial one.”

Real Madrid’s approach was not the first by a European club. West Ham United reportedly had a £12 million bid snubbed in July 2010 before Chelsea were heavily linked with a £25m switch in the same year.

The former Santos player already has 12 goals and 11 assists for the Catalan side this season.
