Former Brazil international Romário has distanced himself from comparisons with Neymar.

The 47 year-old admits the former Santos youngster could surpass him, but rejects suggestions he already has.

“Neymar is playing well and will be a huge star in the future, but it is too early to compare him with me,” Romário said in an interview with O Dia, as reported by goal.com.

“However, if he continues to play at this level, then, who knows, you could even say he will be better than me when his career finishes. Today he is not.”

Like Neymar, Romário played for Barcelona. He spent two seasons in Catalunya – 1993-1995 – before joining Flamengo. He returned to Spain a year later, on loan with Valencia.

Throughout his career, he played for ten different clubs and represented Brazil 70 times, scoring 55 goals.

Romário is recognised as one of the few players to have netted over 1000 goals in his career.
